Asphalt Shingle Roof Replacement - Tan Weathered-Wood Blend With Skylights

A tan weathered-wood blend shingle replacement on a Mediterranean-style home, combined with full skylight reflashing on four skylights. The job exposed multiple layers of failed sealant and missing step-flashing from previous repairs. Factory flashing kits from the skylight manufacturer replaced all improper field improvisation.

Asphalt Shingle Roof Replacement - Tan Weathered-Wood Blend With Skylights: Project Notes

If you've ever had a roof leak that the previous roofer couldn't find, there's a high probability the source was a skylight that wasn't properly flashed.

Skylights penetrate the roof field. Every penetration is a leak risk unless flashed and integrated with the underlayment correctly. Manufacturer flashing kits exist for exactly this reason, and they're not optional.

This homeowner had four skylights and a history of intermittent leaks at two of them. Previous roofers had tried sealing with mastic and roofing cement - short-term fixes that always fail. By the time we tore off, we found multiple layers of failed sealant, missing step-flashing on the upslope side of two of the skylights, and a counter-flash that had separated from the curb.

Our install: full tear-off down to deck, ice-and-water membrane wrapped around each skylight curb and lapped 6 inches up the sides and across the head and sill, factory step-flashing kits from the skylight manufacturer installed per the printed instructions (no field improvisation, no extra sealant required), synthetic underlayment over the rest of the field, and architectural shingles cut and woven into the step-flashing correctly.

Seven photos document the deck, the membrane lap detail at skylight curbs, the factory step-flashing kits installed, the surrounding shingle field, and the finished roof with all four skylights leak-proof.
