Asphalt Shingle Roof Installation - Charcoal Hip-Roof Home

A clean, dimensional charcoal shingle roof on a hip-style home - exactly the kind of job that looks effortless from the curb but takes proper system thinking underneath.

Our crew started with a full tear-off down to deck so we could inspect every square foot of sheathing. Old roofs often hide rot at hips and valleys where decades of small leaks have worked into the wood, and you cannot put a 30-year shingle on questionable substrate. Any compromised decking was replaced with new CDX plywood and re-nailed to current code.

From there we installed a high-temp synthetic underlayment across the entire field, with self-adhered ice-and-water membrane in valleys, around penetrations, and along eaves. New step-flashing replaced the old galvanized at every wall-to-roof transition, and we re-counter-flashed the chimney with painted aluminum.

The shingles are Owens Corning architectural-grade in a charcoal blend. We hand-nailed the field rather than gun-nailing every fastener, because hand-nailing lets the installer feel when a shingle is sitting properly and prevents the over-driven nails that cause shingle slippage years later.

Ridge venting was added the full length of the ridge with intake at the soffits. Without proper balanced ventilation, a shingle warranty isn't worth much - heat accumulates in the attic, granules bake off the shingles, and a 30-year roof becomes a 15-year roof.
